If you are like most, you probably do not want people to know where you are at all times of the day, but a lot of social media apps are tracking your location and making it easy for others to do the same. For example, Facebook tracks the location of all your messages. It is pretty well known that the messenger app uses location data but it is not so well known how that data is used. The handy folks over at google created an extension called Marauder’s Map that gives some some pretty unsettling location data from the app. The extension is able to work because Facebook Messenger ties a user’s location data to a message if their location settings are enabled, but it only works if the person you are messaging has their location data turned on too. The main issue with this extension is it allows people to view your location even if you are not friends with them!

Instagram also collects some pretty specific data about user’s locations based on where they post images. The picture sharing app gives users the option to name the location of where they are uploading an image, it also geotags the picture no matter what. The scariest part of this is that most people tend to upload images from their home or work. If a user’s profile is public and their map is turned on, anybody can see the exact location of where they are posting. Keep in mind that even if a person’s profile is private, their friends can still see all the location data. Even if people opt to willingly share their location on social media may be surprised how difficult it is to disappear. For example, Foursquare’s check-in app broadcasts user’s exact location even if they have not selected a specific location for check-in. It is important to stay informed and safe while using social media. Taking proper precautions is necessary.
